Glory. What was on Jesus’ heart as he approached the hour of his trial and crucifixion? Who and what were uppermost in his mind? The fullest and most intimate portrayal is given to us in John’s gospel—from chapter 12 to chapter 17. Jesus finished his public ministry by raising Lazarus from the dead and offering himself as the resurrection and the life, and the light of the world. In the upper room, Jesus opens his heart in a way he never had before and it shocked and strengthened his disciples who were there. This is John 12 – 17. It is powerful and personal, and has been called ‘the book of glory’—since Jesus here reveals that the cross is the supreme accomplishment and revelation of the glory of God.
